Events in SAA

SAA organizes and sponsors events from the local to the international level. Locally, these events include recovery-based retreats, workshops, and quarterly socials. Occasionally, the Phoenix Intergroup authorizes the posting of events to this website that are not directly related to recovery through the Program of SAA. We must be very careful and clear about our motives and methods of doing this, lest we violate our own Traditions. Still, we recognize that recovery can take many forms and that our Intergroup's primary purpose, as stated in Tradition Five, is "to carry its message to the sex addict who still suffers".

What constitutes an SAA event?

Events are considered to be "SAA-Related" if they are "of, by, and for" the fellowship of SAA. This phrase (borrowed and paraphrased from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address) was decided upon by the Phoenix Intergroup in 2002 and captures as nearly as possible our idea of what we can endorse as a fellowship. "Of" means that the event has its origins in the fellowship of SAA through individual members, their trusted servants, or intergroup representative. "By" indicates that the event is organized, managed, and run by the SAA fellowship or its representatives. "For" identifies the fact that an event is intended to enhance the recovery of members or prospective members of the SAA fellowship.

What about Non-SAA events?

SAA Tradition Six states: An SAA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the SAA name to any related facility or outside enterprise lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose. This does not mean that we ignore anything and everything helpful to addicts, yet unrelated to SAA. It does mean that non-SAA events must be carefully considered before they will be posted on our website or at our meetings. Even if posted, it is our policy to include a disclaimer restating the wisdom of Tradition Six. We do not endorse such events; we merely convey information about them to our fellowship. This is important to keeping our fellowship as focused as possible on the message of SAA.

If you have a recovery-related event which you would like posted on this site, please contact a member of the Phoenix Metro Are Intergroup of SAA or the webmaster of this site. Let them know the details of the event so it can be placed on the agenda for discussion at the next Intergroup meeting.
