Meetings in the Phoenix Metro Area

 

Meetings are where we share our experience, strength, and hope with each other. By gathering together in a fellowship of the Spirit, we carry the message of hope to addicts who still suffer. There are meetings available every day of the week in the Phoenix metropolitan area. A complete list is available. The cities of Phoenix, Mesa, Glendale, Scottsdale, and Wickenburg all have meetings. Meetings come in various formats. There is a special glossary of common meeting terms below.

 

Meeting Glossary

 

Breakout Groups The meeting begins as a single group, but then breaks up into smaller groups for purposes of discussion or check-in.

 

Big Book The fundamental A.A. text entitled "Alcoholics Anonymous", currently in its fourth edition.

 

Business Meeting A meeting wherein matters related to group business (e.g., finances, procedures, meeting format, etc) is discussed. Intergroup business meetings are concerned with area-wide issues between and including all participating groups.

 

Check-In Sharing one's recent personal experience, strength, and hope in a meeting with other sex addicts. Some meetings may have specific guidelines on what does and does not constitute check-in.

 

Closed Meeting A meeting that is attended only by those sincerely seeking answers to the problem of sexual addiction. Newcomers are welcome.

 

Feedback Response to a check-in from a member in the fellowship who heard it. Generally focuses on the application of recovery or Twelve Step priniciples. In general, NOT therapy or advice. Some meetings may have specific guidelines on what does and does not constitute feedback.

 

Intergroup A loosely organized group of trusted servants representing local area meetings. The group meets regularly to check the health of the local fellowship, plan events (such as socials), and provide services (such as this website) to the members of SAA.

 

Men-Only Requested by the Group Conscience of a meeting that only men may attend.

 

Mixed Requested by the Group Conscience of a meeting that both men and women may attend.

 

One Group The meeting begins, continues, and ends with a single group; no breakout groups.

 

Open Meeting A meeting that can be attended by anyone interested in SAA, whether in recovery or not. In general, this can include the public.

 

Speaker Meeting A meeting at which a selected individual shares their experience, strength, and hope with the entire group in attendance.

 

Step Study Meeting A meeting focusing on one or more of the Twelve Steps.

 

Topic Meeting A meeting in which discussion centers around one or more topics of general interest to sex addicts in recovery.

 

Twelfth Step The taking aside of a newcomer by one or more of those in attendance at a meeting in order to introduce the newcomer to the SAA program. In general, those performing the Twelfth Step will briefly share their own stories, explain the nature of the program, and allow the newcomer to comment, ask questions, share their own situation, or simply do nothing.

 

Women-Only Requested by the Group Conscience of a meeting that only women may attend.
